Asheville Montessori School
Ms. Monica's Class
Monica Curwen – Lead Teacher “Hola! I am Monica Curwen. Originally from Chicago, I spent my formative years in Nashville, TN. I have lived in Asheville since 94’ and know that I am at home in the mountains! After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a BA in Spanish in 2000 and settling in town to begin a family, my love for teaching was kindled about 4 years ago. While my son was attending the Julia Street location, I discovered quickly how much the Montessori method both inspired my child’s love for learning and awakened my love of teaching. I then began teaching Spanish at Asheville Montessori School while working towards my full Montessori accreditation. I now live in North Asheville with my husband and two sons. We are an extremely active family; whether hiking, camping, running or cycling, we are constantly in motion and at play! I look forward to working, playing, and sharing the joy of learning with your children.”
Assistant Teachers
Andrew Saldino – My first exposure to Montessori was when my son entered a toddler program at 18 months. I was amazed by the level of independence that was expected and attained, and now he is entering his Kindergarten year at AMS. After studying Montessori’s ideas and the curriculum that she worked out over 50 years, I am more impressed than ever with the extraordinary power of the Montessori Method. I am very excited to have the opportunity to learn this system and serve the children of Asheville Montessori School as they pursue their individual paths of growth and development. I hope to utilize this experience as a springboard to opening a Montessori Middle School near downtown Asheville. Before teaching at AMS, I earned a PhD in Philosophy of Religion and worked as a college professor for five years and then resigned to create the most ecologically progressive subdivision in Boone, NC (www.EcoLogicDevelopments.com). Our family– including my wife and two sons, Dante and Marcel– moved to Asheville in 2010.
Lisa Martinez – Hi, my name is Lisa Martinez, & I am originally from Weehawken, NJ. Shortly after high school, I relocated to Anna Maria Is., FL. I graduated from Ringling College of Art & Design with my BFA in graphic design, photography, and children’s literature.
During my early college years, I was introduced to Montessori and loved it! I went ahead and received my Montessori Assistant Certification and worked part time. After graduating from Ringling College, I returned to Asheville, my favorite town, and found AMS. I have been here since 2009. I am honored to be part of the children’s childrens life journey, to assist and guide them as they evolve to be the best they can be!
